2 Player Strategy Games for Teens & Tweens

We are a board game family!  Our closet is full of 3 to 5 player board games that are perfect for family game night, but our teenage children now want some challenging 2 player games they can play against each other outside of family game night, or when they have a friend over.

Sometimes siblings are busy and your can't get enough people to play the game, 2 player games are the perfect solution!  We have twin teenagers, so 2 player board games are perfect for us!

My teens are growing our of toys and their tastes for electronics is usually out of my price range.  Last year I bought them several 2 person board games for Christmas and for their birthday, all received with much success!

These are also great solutions for adults without children who want strategy based 2 player games!

7 Wonders Duel Board Game

This is my teen son's new favorite game, 7 Wonders Duel!  It is the two player version of our family favorite, 7 Wonders. Experience an intense two-player struggle for supremacy in the ancient world! Challenge your opponent and bring your civilization to victory with Prestigious Buildings, Military Supremacy or Scientific Supremacy.

Decide to invest in science, military or prestige. If you fail to build defenses, your capital city may be destroyed, but ignore technology and your people may be left in the dark ages. Will your city achieve greatness, or will your opponent prevent you from completing all your Wonders?

One game of 7 Wonders Duel plays over the course of three rounds, called Ages, during which you will choose cards with increasingly powerful effects. Each card you choose will influence your general strategy.

Codenames: Duet -

The Two Player Word Deduction Game

Another 2 player version of a family game night favorite! Codenames Duet game is perfect gift for a teen who wants some quick fun rounds with their friends.  My boys will play 4 to 6 rounds of this in a row! Based-on the original party game hit, Codenames, Codenames Duet is a standalone co-op clue giving adventure that sends you and your partner on a top secret mission to a crowded city. Your objective? Contact 15 agents while avoiding a band of enemy assassins.

You know the agents that your partner can contact safely; they know the agents you can contact safely. By giving each other one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board, you must try to find all the agents before your turns run out.

400 all new words compatible with original Codenames
New cooperative gameplay
Campaign mode to record your progress
Variable difficulty to challenge even the greatest spies

Imhotep The Duel is the 2-Player Version of  Imhotep, Builder of Egypt Board Game.

In this two-player version of the award-winning Imhotep board game, players take on the roles of Nefertiti and Akhenaten, one of ancient Egypt's most famous royal couples. Game pieces must be cleverly placed so that players can unload the most valuable tiles from the six boats. While this is happening, each player builds their own four monuments in order to gain as many points as possible.

his tiny worker placement game is HUGE on strategy. It is not merely a rehash of the original. Rather, the creator was able to take a few key elements and develop a brand new game.

Imhotep: The Duel
Ages 10 and up
Average Playing Time: 30 Minutes

Kahuna Board Game: 2 Player Kosmos Game Area Control Strategy

Kahuna is another great 2 player game by one of our favorite game makers, Kosmos. Who will rule the South Seas? Two Kahuna — ancient sorcerers of the Pacific — compete for dominance on an archipelago consisting of twelve small islands. Using their magic and wisdom, they struggle for control of the islands. They anxiously await the cards handed to them by fate. But when the time is right, they move to capture one, two, or even more islands, trying to gain the upper hand. At the mercy of the magical powers of the South Seas, they quickly realize that even the best magic is no good without strategy.

Kahuna
Ages 10 and up
Average Playing Time: 30 Minutes

The Fox in The Forest Duet is a cooperative 2 player only version of the classic The Fox in the Forest.
It's a trick taking game with a tiny bit of a board game element. Duet is cooperative whereas the original Fox in the Forest is competitive. In Duet you are working together to strategically control who wins the trick in order to move the "Fox" towards whoever won the trick. You're trying to clear all the gem tokens within 3 rounds to win.

Work together to play tricks and move through the forest. Use the special abilities of the characters to exchange cards with each other, then let your teammate follow with any card, and more. Win as a team by collecting all the gems, but be careful to stay on the path and not get lost. Most points at the end wins.

The Fox in the Forest: Duet
Ages 10 and Up.

Christmas Children's Sermon

I just gave this Children's Sermon during our Sunday Worship Service. It can used at home for a Family Christmas Devotional.  In my experience the keys to an effective Children's Lesson are:
  • Keep is developmentally appropriate in content
Children are NOT abstract learners.  Teach in concrete ways, telling stories that relate-able and tangible which is the same way Jesus taught.  Have Props whenever possible.  Children need to touch SOMETHING to learn.  They need to move and connect to the content through their bodies.
  • Keep it developmentally appropriate in time
Teach to the attention level of the youngest person in the group.  If you have a mixed age group of children, your sermon should be no longer than 5 minutes. If the youngest starts to squirm, you loose the rest of the group.  It is not being "theologically shallow" to teach the basic, yet powerful, principles of our faith to children.
  • Keep the kids engaged through motions and participation.
Kids do not do lectures, EVER.  No matter the context or content, children must be actively engaging in the lesson through answering questions or moving their body.  You will see in the sermon below that the kids are asked to answer OPEN ENDED questions.  Ask questions that have many answers, and many children will feel like they can participate.  Each ribbon also has an accompanying motion, because kids through DOING and MOVING.

Materials Needed:
 • White gift box filled with fruit snacks
 • Black ribbon
 • Red ribbon
 • White ribbon
 • Gold ribbon

 Whose birthday is on Christmas?

JESUS!

We get presents on our birthday, and the cool thing about Jesus' birthday is that YOU get presents for HIS birthday. His birthday is so special because Jesus was God's Son! Do you get presents on your birthday?

Allow for response.

A lot of gifts have pretty ribbons. I have some pretty ribbons here. I am going to tell you a story using only ribbons

 BLACK RIBBON
Here is some black ribbon. What are some things that are the color black?

Allow responses.

Something that is also black is darkness. Have you ever been a room when the lights are turned off.

 Cover your eyes!

Wait for them cover their eyes.

No peeking! You can't see anything! Black darkness makes it so that we can't see anything!

That is why we will have the black ribbon for sin, because sin makes us not be able to see God. Sin are choices that hurt or other people. Sin makes it so that we can't see God.

Sin covers our eyes with darkness and we can't see all the good that God wants for us, or the good choices God wants us to make.

RED RIBBON
Now let's go to the red ribbon. What are things that are red?

 Allow responses.

Have you ever seen a red picture of a heart? Did you know we have a red heart in our bodies? Do you know where your heart is?

Put your hand over it and make a heart.

Our hearts are red, and our hearts push all the blood in our bodies to keep us healthy. Put your hand over your heart and pretend to beat it and push all the blood around your bodies.

 Baboom baboom

The reason I have a red ribbon is when Jesus grew up be a man, his red blood saved us! How did he do that? He died on a cross where his blood was shed. His saving blood.

WHITE RIBBON
That red ribbon leads to the next ribbon. What are things that are white?

 Allow responses

Snow is white! Ever see snow before ANYONE TOUCHES IT? It is so clean and white and BRIGHT! Have you ever seen bright light on a fresh snow?

White is bright and light! It helps us see!! Jesus is called the Light of the world!

We can see Him here on Earth because his blood washed away that black dark sin covering our sins. We can see God when we know Jesus died for our sins! His red blood helps us see! We see what God wants for us and the choices He wants us to make.

Cover your eyes like the dark black ribbons.

Now pump your heart for the red blood of Jesus.

Now take your hands off your eyes to see the light of Jesus!

GOLD RIBBON
My last ribbon is a gold ribbon. Gold is shiny and costs a lot of money! Gold is super fancy!

Has anyone walked on a gold sidewalk before?

The Bible says that the sidewalks and streets in Heaven are paved with Gold!

When we believe that Jesus' blood saves and uncover the blackness from our eyes, then when when we die we will get see God in Heaven too, and walk on streets of gold!

You are all going to get Christmas presents this week. If you see a Black, Red, White, or Gold Ribbon, make sure to tell your family what it means!

Now that I've taken off all my ribbon, let's look inside for our present!

Children's Sermons- Christmas and Advent

We have a family services on big holidays, this allows families to worship together, including all our volunteers.  We provide each child a clipboard with two coloring pages and a ziploc bag of crayons. There is also a short Children's Sermon, a time we invite children to the stage and make them feel a part of the service.

Below are two Children's Sermons, one for beginning of Advent and one for Christmas Morning!

Note for on Stage Children's Sermons: KEEP IT SHORT. Please don't be tempted to make this 10 minutes. For preschool and elementary, you have 3 to 5 minutes MAX undivided attention for quality learning. Three to five minutes will feel too short to you as an adult, but it is developmentally appropriate, trust me.

CHRISTMAS CHILDREN'S SERMON:Advent

Waiting is hard/ADVENT

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • bowl of candy (sugar free candy like fruit snack or something to keep parents happy)
  • OR a bowl of simple toys

Look at this big bowl of fruit snacks! Who likes fruit snacks? You can all have one BUT you have to wait until end of the story to have one.

Waiting is hard isn't it?!?!?!

What are things we have to wait for?

Take 2 to 3 responses. (Birthdays and Christmas, Lines, etc.)

We are starting Advent , can you say Advent with me? ADVENT. Isn't that a funny word?
That is a big fancy church word for...."Waiting for Christmas!"

Who likes Christmas? What do you like about Christmas?

Take 2 to 3 responses.

Christmas is when lots of good things happen, like presents and time with family. People in the Bible had to wait A LONG LONG LONG LOOOOOONG time for the first Christmas!!!! Hundreds of years!!!

They waited....and waited.... and waited for the Messiah. Can you say Messiah with me? MESSIAH. That is a big church word for a person who saves us! A Messiah saves people.

So they waited....and waited......and waited for the Messiah. That Messiah was born on first Christmas!

Who was born on the first Christmas?

(JESUS!) Let them answer loudly.

Waiting for Jesus was HARD, even harder than your wait for Christmas, or your wait for this toy/candy.

But all that waiting led to something great!
We have to wait for a few more weeks for Christmas, and that is hard, but there will be great things when we get there!

Thank you for waiting. Waiting is hard, but it is good!!!

You can come pick a a pack of fruit snacks then go sit with your parents!

We give FOUR presents for Christmas

Gifts can be a tricky subject.

First of all, NO JUDGEMENT.  Do Christmas gifts  in prayerful consideration of what works for your family. This is a non-essential people.  Do not shame others.

Our Christmas Present Policy was born after a Christmas when I witnessed my 3 1/2 year old twin boys rip through every present in 2 seconds, then throw it aside and exclaim "What else did I get?!?!"  Yes, I know they were only 3 years old, but it is never too early to teach gratitude.

For several years, our gift policy was three presents each, since that was how many Jesus received.  It was simple for their preschool minds to understand.

We also focused on GIFT MANNERS:

  1. Before opening a gift, find out who it is from.
  2. Thank the giver for buying  you a gift, before opening.
  3. After opening, thank the giver again for that specific. Use eye contact.
As my kids have gotten a little older, around 1st grade, we moved into a more refined present policy of Four Presents:

Something you want
Something you need
Something you can wear
Something you can read

1.  Something you want
I want them to open one gift that makes their heart race on Christmas Morning.  It is not a cliche to have your heart race with the gift of Jesus, so why not give our children that experience in a  tangible way they can understand?

This is where your child's "wish list" comes into play. If you are on a budget, you may need to supervise your child's list making process. I personally don't believe it is good for children , especially elementary and preteen, to be taught that Christmas is an excuse to become irresponsible with the money God has given us. Don't be afraid to share that you using a  budget with your children. You can make this kid friendly teaching moment about living within our means.  I supervise my kids putting 2 to 3 items on a list. If they are using store ads (we don't get these, but my mother in law always give them these to pick their presents when at her house), then I make sure they are putting items on the list that are in our budget.

A great story was last year when my 4th grader only wanted ONE thing, but it was $40 over our budget for all his presents combined.  I told him he needed to add a few more items to his list, and he added at least 3 more items that were well within our budget.  PRAISE THE LORD I found the gift he had originally wanted on Ebay for $20 under budget!!! The memory of his face when he opened it is one of my favorite Mommy moments ever!!!!

2.  Something you need

This is the practical, but still fun, gift.  It can be anything from a new comforter for their bed, a new bookbag for school, or even a a keyboard for piano lessons. It can also be as simple as new socks and undies. I do recommended if you go the undies or socks route, splurge and  get the "cool" character ones. It is Christmas after all!

3.  Something you can wear
Pretty self explanatory. I like using this category to support a small business if possible, by ordering handmade hats from a local mom.

4.  Something you can read
Again, kind of self explanatory. We kept it inexpensive when the boys were preschoolers by stocking up on books from the local library sale. If your kids are into series, you can add to their collections through this gift.
Since are the stereotypical homeschool family, I tend toward educational books. We have been been adding to their Imagination Station book series for the past 2 years.  Now they are getting a little older, we are also planning on buying them more of the I Survived Collection.

If you would like a spiritual gift, buy a devotional or prayer journal. We really enjoyed My Big Book of 5-minute Devotions when my boys were in Preschool-2nd grade.   If you have a boy in your life, I highly highly recommend  The Action Bible. My in-laws bought these for my boys when they were baptized, and they literally spend hours reading them.

NO SEW~Tie Snakes

Great present to wrap around the tree for Christmas morning!

This project came from having two sons & two nephews who all asked for gifts they could use on "adventures". I threw in a pair of inexpensive binoculars, and you have hours of imaginative fun! I also found a few pink ties, and made these for my nieces!  All kids loved them and played with them all Christmas Morning.

Materials needed:
  • old tie (s)
  • hot glue gun
  • stuffing from an old pillow
  • googly eyes
  • red felt
  • scissors
  • un-sharpened pencil  and marker

1. Stuff Tie
I first found an old pillow we didn't use anymore and cut it open to harvest the stuffing.  Then  I used the pencil to slowly put small pieces in the snake.  Stuff from one end, and push till you get to the middle; you will need to bunch the tie over the pencil.  Once one side is stuffed, stuff from other side of tie. Push slowly so you don't tear the seams of the tie.

TIP: At the smaller end, do not over stuff end and even leave the end empty to make gluing easier. At larger end leave room to refold side of tie to original triangle shape. A marker is good for ends to, but the pencils gets the stuffing to middle of tie better without breaking seams.

2. Glue Ends
I used the hot glue guns to close the ends. Make sure when stuffing to not to over stuff because it could tear seams of tie.  I ended up hot gluing middle seam for extra security since I knew the snakes were going to active boys.

3. Decorate
Glue googly eyes and red felt tongue  to the large end of tie.  If you are giving to girl you could even add some yarn hair or felt bow:) I am thinking if I find a pink tie at the thrift store that my niece may be getting one of these next year:)

Christmas Gifts Preschoolers Can Make

Every year I have the kids help with Christmas Presents for our family. It seems to give them a sense of ownership in the giving process, and in turn giving them experience of the joy of giving.
The materials I used were all art materials I already had in my house. We may not have spent a lot of money on these, but the couple of hours that went into them was part of the gift we gave to our friends and family.

HAND PRINT TAGS
After we explored with green paint I helped the boys make some handprints that were used for labels for our annual puppy chow bags. Daddy made the puppy chow this year because I was sick and didn't wan to infect out entire extended family!

FINGER-PAINTED CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS/BOOKMARKS

We first started our 2010 Kid-Made Christmas Projects with SEVERAL finger-painting sessions. I would not recommend trying this all in one session, or you will burn out your kids and yourself. For a really cute addition, print pictures of your kids fingerprinting to include with the bookmark.

We didn't have green finger paint, so it was a great time to learn how yellow and blue make green. Just let the kids explore the paint.  Let dry and cut out trees.

On a different day, we did some Easel Painting for the backdrop of our our ornaments. You can just as easily do some red finger-painting to do the background, but I found this great easel at Goodwill and the boys love any excuse to paint with it.

I finished the bookmark/ornaments by mounting them on construction paper, putting contact paper over each one, then attaching some embroidery thread we already had in the house.
